Diamonds in the Making: A Girl Empowerment Program

DID YOU KNOW: The adolescent years can be challenging for teen girls as they face a roller coaster of changes in themselves and are barraged by messages from the media.  By the time a girl is 17 years old, she will have received more than 250,000 messages about appearance from the media, according to HealthyPlace.  This begins early in childhood; almost 50 percent of toy commercials for girls talk about physical attractiveness, while advertising for boys does not. Media and other messages can impact self-esteem, body image and mental health. Diamonds in the Making “Girls Social Group” sponsored by Learning for Life Youth Programsis a youth development organization that seeks to empower youth by providing them with relevant tools to combat negative messages that can effective their positive self-image and value in nurturing, fun-filled and supportive environments. 
Targeted Audience: Girls Ages 10-15 Years

After School & Camp

Purpose: to provide a platform for girls ages 10-15 to develop positive self-image by supporting, helping and providing them with the tools to understand and appreciate who they are.

Girls will attend interactive workshops after school on designated dates until the workshop is completed which will end with a workshop ceremony and or retreat. The program will cover the following topics:

Body & Self-Image (work with what you got)
Diversity
Self-Confidence at any age
What am I projecting?

WORKSHOPS 3 & 4 TITLE: DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?

Anger Management
Gossiping & Rumors
Who and What are you listening to & why?
Effective Communication (being assertive and proactive) (at any age)

WORKSHOPS 5 & 6 TITLE: DO YOU FEEL WHAT I FEEL?

Bullying (in all forms) – internet, texting, Facebook, etc.
How to combat negative images, communications and suggestions
Healthy friendships and relationships
Self-Awareness – (be true to you)
